WAYNE WHITE
Drop The Country Boy Act
Unique Sculpture, Paintings, Drawings, Bronze Editions, Monotypes
March 15 – April 19, 2008

Western Project is proud to present a new body of work by Los Angeles artist, Wayne White. This exhibition is comprised of numerous mediums: sculpture, monotypes, bronze editions, drawings, and paintings on canvas. The images are reminiscent of country road signs – quirky letter configurations eliciting fun, entertainment, and possible dangers.  Primarily vertical in orientation, White’s pictures feel monumental; stacks of surrealistic wisdom, pointing to a carnival sideshow somewhere between here and the curious landscape of his imagination.  It is classic Americana: colloquial tidbits, confessional tales and humorous knowledge.  Drop The Country Boy Act is really punk Mark Twain defiance; cardboard sculptures – and cardboard sculptures in bronze (Dude Starts Freakin’).

A 14 foot high hillbilly diorama sculpture is the centerpiece of White’s exhibition.  It is a country fair jubilee in wood, stone, mirror, metal and language – a reliquary of giant proportion.  It is revelatory and absurd – a back woods oracle for all ages.  Against the backdrop of high technology and extreme everything, White’s sensibility wreaks havoc with simplicity.  It is an intimate and profound, singular vision.

White is currently in the group exhibition Buildup, at The Ottawa Art Gallery in Ontario, Canada.  He has shown extensively in the US: Los Angeles, New York, Houston, Dallas, Seattle, Chicago, Memphis, Miami, and in Italy, and Stockholm.
